Labs builds systems. Frontier establishes them in living places. Firma Frontier brings systems, builders, communities, land, infrastructure, and outside collaborators together under real conditions. The ATX Settlemint is its first campus — the place where the Firma Order stops being a diagram and becomes visible, lived, and tested.
Firma Labs builds systems. Firma Frontier establishes them in living places. The distinction protects both: Labs keeps the engineering discipline of a systems house; Frontier carries the field discipline of real land, real jurisdictions, real neighbors, and real weather.
Frontier is one of the five Domains of the Firma Order — alongside Foundation, Capital, Labs, and Theosis. Its proposed Sphere structures are Frontier Campuses, Settlemint Formation, and Network States.
Frontier Campuses are the places. Living Labs are how those places build. Firma systems are among the things built and tested there.
THE SHORTEST EXPLANATIONA Frontier Campus is a place that runs a Living Lab — not a standardized branch or a replica of ATX. One campus might focus on regenerative farming; another on sovereign compute, health, energy, housing, legal systems, or Settlemint formation.

People at ATX may live in the same place while contributing through different Domains and Spheres. They come together through Swarms formed around actual Settlemint needs.

Each contributing Domain and Sphere keeps its declared authority; the Swarm receives only the authority needed to accomplish its outcome. This is not matrix-management where everyone reports to everyone — the Pod has one clear purpose, one home, declared authority, and visible accountabilities.
ATX hosts multiple cross-Domain Swarms and initiatives without turning each one into a new Sphere. The pattern is always the same: a Sphere keeps stewardship of its purpose, a Pod forms around a real ATX outcome, residents live with what is created, and the evidence returns to the Order.

The clearest way to understand the Living Lab is to follow one system all the way through it. NOMOS is Firma’s legal platform. It may be built, tested, and refined through real legal and community conditions at ATX and future Frontier Campus Living Labs — which makes it the cleanest illustration of how a system owned by one Sphere meets reality in a place stewarded by another.
The first thing to get right is what NOMOS is not in this picture.

WHAT NOMOS SAYS TO THE WORLDThat is the honest outward story, and it is worth telling plainly: a legal platform proven in a real place, with a designated portion open to the people who need it most — the ones building outside the systems that already exist.
NOMOS is a catalyst project, not the destination. Its real return is what it pulls forward with it. A legal platform cannot be built without solving problems the rest of the Order needs solved anyway — which is exactly why it earns the first seat at the Living Lab.

Open participation, open-source code, and Firma ownership are separate questions. Conflating them is the most common way this gets described wrongly.

Every piece of work at a Living Lab runs the same four beats. Here they are with NOMOS in them.
Firma Labs holds NOMOS. Its purpose, its roadmap, and the decisions about what the platform is remain in Labs — they do not transfer to ATX because ATX is where the testing happens. The Foundation’s Protocol work supplies the canonical rules and standards NOMOS must honor; that stays with the Foundation.
LABS HOLDS THE SYSTEM ✴ FOUNDATION HOLDS THE STANDARDS
Not "work on NOMOS" — a defined outcome under real legal and community conditions at ATX. The Swarm’s owner is the site; its members come from wherever the outcome requires: Labs for the platform, Foundation for standards, Frontier for place and local partnerships, residents and local stewards for what the law actually has to do here, and outside legal builders for experience Firma does not possess internally. Each contributing Domain and Sphere keeps its declared authority; the Swarm receives only the authority needed to accomplish its outcome.
ONE PURPOSE ✴ ONE HOME ✴ DECLARED AUTHORITY
This is the step that cannot be simulated. Real legal conditions mean real disputes, real agreements, real records, and real people who have to use the thing when it is inconvenient. Residents are not test subjects — they shape what they must actually live with, and their judgment is part of the result.
ATX RESIDENTS & LOCAL STEWARDS
What worked, what failed, what needed maintenance, where it created conflict, and what had to adapt — all of it returns to Labs as the platform’s steward and to the Foundation where it touches standards. Success, failure, maintenance, conflict, and adaptation become evidence rather than marketing claims. What proves transferable travels to the next Frontier Campus; what was local to ATX stays local, and saying so is also a result.

An outside community could participate in a relevant Swarm, host a small demonstration at ATX, and receive access to the designated open-source portion of NOMOS — all without joining Firma. If such a community later chose to pursue recognition as a Settlemint, that would happen through voluntary protocol and its own legitimate governance, not through Firma claiming ownership over the community.

All stewardship here is temporary as we scale. The interim structure predates the Order language, and maps cleanly onto it — each interim seat builds out a primary Sphere, the all-hands is the shared table, and the living labs speak for Frontier. Full detail: Interim Team & Rollout.
The ATX Living Lab is porous enough to bring in knowledge from outside the Firma Order without absorbing every participant or institution into Firma. Institutional partnership always requires its own explicit agreement.
